The History of Early Los Angeles

Learn about the history of Los Angeles from its founding as a pueblo of 44 people in 1781 through California’s statehood in 1850.  This program will also cover the factors that allowed the pueblo of 1500 people at the time of statehood to become the metropolis of over 4 million that Los Angeles is today.  Bruce Phillips, EdD, and Katy Phillips, MS will present this interesting program; both are native Californians and retired educators.

Come join Bolton Hall Museum’s very own Indiana Jones of the Tujunga Valley as he reveals his recent discoveries.  Craig Durst, The History Hunter, will take you along for a ride into his adventures in the field, investigating some of the historical aspects of our community.

Charles Fisher

Our speaker, published author, historian and preservation activist Charles J. Fisher has successfully steered well over 100 sites through the process to achieve monument status, and is an undisputed expert in his field.

The Pioneers of Eagle Rock

After the Rancho San Rafael was divided, Benjamin Dreyfus was awarded the hilly area north of downtown Los Angeles known as Eagle Rock Valley. By 1911, this farming community had rapidly grown into a city.

Rockhaven:

A Gracious Past and Uncertain Future

Rockhaven was established in 1923 by psychiatric nurse Agnes Richards for women with “mild mental and nervous disorders.”  Rockhaven is a beautiful place full of remarkable stories.  Learn about the hopes for its future.

Joan Renner

Joan Renner is a writer, social historian, and lecturer. Her blog, Deranged L.A. Crimes®, recounts true tales of murder, mayhem, political corruption, and celebrity scandal from the 1920s through the 1970s. Joan has appeared in numerous episodes of: Deadly Affairs, Evil Twins, Deadly Women, Evil Kin, and Dark Temptations for the ID Discovery Channel.

We do not have Second Saturday programs in July or August.  It’s just too hot. 

Programs resume in September.
